A quick tribute to a sharp man

Dave Trott's Blog is fantastic.

Ok I, being Raw, find myself getting bogged down in a problem very easily. My heads as messy as my room usually, and as with anything else, a great way to see how messy it is, is to get away from it. However, the best way to see how messy it is, is to go to a house that is really really tidy, and that's what Dave's blog is like.

His thinking is clear and his points are precise. Each blog says one thing, and while his examples might be up for debate, (see comments on art in 'simplify and exaggerate') they at least make his point every time in a way that is easy to understand.

So, I would advise, (seeing as this has literally just worked for me, and it isn't the first time) any time that you feel like you're looking at a brick wall that hates you instead of a page of notes,

STOP what you are doing

GO make a cuppa

and put it out of your mind as you browse his thoughts.

Allow the natural interest you have in the subjects he's talking about to fill your head and before you know it, he'll just say the one thing you needed to hear. Don't go looking for it, just be happy when you find it.

Your mind needs feeding just like you do.

I recommend getting his blog on an RSS reader because that is the only way i've been able to keep up.

FINK AGAIN!

Leander James Branson Thom, or Leander James Branson Thom to those who know him well, has a new home at AKQA and he managed to get us across the drawbridge.

First things first, AKQA is mint. It is a great agency to be creative in, there is a lot of support for creativity outside of the work you're doing; while we were there, Leo was finishing an internal competition entry for a short film, the winner of which will get funding from the company to make it. Everyone wins.

That though is not why we're writing, we're writing because of something that Matt and Per said while critting our book; when Graham Fink looked at theirs, while they were on the circuit, he finished with these words:

"There's nothing in here that scares me, and that's why i'm not going to hire you."

This was a major theme of the crits we got yesterday, both from Leo and Matt&Per. Leo got recommended because his book was 'mental' (to use their phrase). I think its very easy to forget that they're looking for something out of the ordinary. Moreover, we are going to book crits, essentially looking for work, we've all got to be something really special before anyone is going to start parting with money.

No of us should be playing by rules.

They'll already have safe people.
